September: The Last Breath of Summer in Kashmir

By Samiya Ali

As September arrives in Kashmir, the air carries a subtle shift. The long, golden days of summer begin to mellow, and homes quietly prepare for the transformations that lie ahead. September is often seen as the last breath of summer, a gentle pause before autumn sweeps in with its vivid palette and cozy rhythms.

The Arrival of Autumn in Kashmir

By October, the season changes in full glory. Chinar trees turn crimson, carpeting the ground with fiery leaves and painting the valley in shades of red and gold. The green fields of summer gradually turn brown as saffron harvesting begins, marking an important season for local farmers. With the fields busy and the harvest in progress, many farmers start taking up hand embroidery work at home, blending tradition with livelihood. This natural transformation also inspires a change indoors, as households begin preparing for the colder months.

Preparing for Winter in Kashmiri Homes

Kashmiri homes are deeply tied to tradition, and as the chill sets in, families stock wooden logs to fuel the Hamam – a traditional stone-heated room that remains the heart of warmth during winter. This ritual marks the transition from the lightness of summer to the snug comforts of the colder season. By this time, locals also stock up on charcoal, later used to prepare the Kangri. The Kangri is a traditional earthen pot encased in a handwoven wicker basket, designed to keep warm during the harsh winters of Kashmir. Filled with hot embers, it is carried under the pheran (a long woollen cloak), offering portable warmth throughout the day. Beyond its practical use, the Kangri is also a cultural symbol representing comfort and the ingenuity of Kashmiri traditions.

A Seasonal Shift in Home Furnishings

With cooler winds, Kashmiri home interiors undergo a seasonal transformation. Cotton curtains and airy bedcovers give way to thick khadar weaves, wrapping interiors in warmth and texture. Even the floors are not left untouched – woollen Namdas replace lighter carpets, adding coziness and character to living spaces. Rooms with wooden flooring are often layered with wall-to-wall mats beneath the Namdas or woollen carpets, helping maintain floor temperature and insulation.

Cotton bedsheets are replaced with woollen sheets, and summer duvets make way for thick blankets. One of the easiest and most comforting ways to stay warm in bed is an electric blanket, placed beneath the bedsheets, which heats the bed in just a few minutes. As the season edges closer to winter, locals also prepare Kangris, with many choosing to keep them under their blankets while sleeping, ensuring gentle warmth throughout the night – a perfect blend of tradition and comfort for Kashmiri winter living.
